Projects & Groups update

This is a quick update from group meetings at our space, other long-term space projects (e.g., Lasercutter, CNC, etc.) or of the lab internal projects.

Cozy fairy light installed

Our test fairy light chain has been installed. It creates a really nice cozy atmosphere, so we can finally hang out properly with our dancing wall skeleton again. You can turn it on/off via the Home Assistant dashboard with the "Piratenkette" icon – it should switch off automatically with the status, but since that's not always reliable, just remember to turn it off after. We might consider buying a brighter and dimmalbe one. The current one is lent. -- Milian & Phier

Cozy light extension

One of my personal projects is building upcycled chandeliers and lights. I’ve now collected quite a few of them, but at the moment they’re just lying around in storage. I think 3–4 of them would fit really nicely into the lab as an extension of our cozy lighting setup. They’re all made from reused materials and enhanced with 3D-printed elements and other modifications.

My idea: I’d like to make them available for free4use as long as I’m a member and install around four of them on the workshop wall/roof, facing the living room area and possibly on the edges of the laser cube. For mounting, I’d use some of the wood we already have and connect them to our existing Zigbee switches so they can be controlled via Home Assistant.

My proposal would be to hang them up, see how they look in place, and then get feedback in the next plenum. If it doesn’t fit well, I’ll simply take them back.

These chandeliers/lights are some of the ones we used at the KreativlaborOpen festival: https://munichmakerlab.slack.com/archives/C78KSC5EG/p1747341339182479

Our both outdoor floodlights are working again. Also the outdoor fairy light is fixed again. Switchable via dashboard or switch on the wall.

Fire prevention update

We've added new sandboxes in the electronics lab to help prevent fires and safely contain any overheated materials. The fire extinguishers have also been updated, we now have a permanent CO2 unit in the electronics corner, plus new foam-based extinguishers throughout all other areas (including one in the kitchen suitable for oil fires, that will be delivered soon).

It's great to have this equipment in place, but let's always prioritize preventing fires or other hazards from occurring in the first place. Fire extinguishers are truly a last resort.

The old ones have been marked as free2take so some members can make their home a little bit safer.

Trash bin community area

We have added two weeks ago a yellow trash bin to the community area as test, if it would be nice to have more bins.

Maybe we should buy a proper one for the community area? -- Milian

  • Something bigger than the small yellow bucket would be nice. --Phier

Teamwerk Makerspace visit

Nico, Chris and Milian visited the Teamwerk Makerspace in Aschheim. It was a combination of public event and meetup of Open Workshops around Munich. Some photos are available in Slack. We good some nice impressions and some more meetups are planned soon. Any member is invited to join.

Probably "Nagel & Faden" will host the next meetup, but if they don't have time we could consider to host the next meetup.

LED Light project

Milan and Phier tested if LED tubes can be installed in our existing halogen sockets and the answer is Yes. The energy saving would be 40% per tube (60 Watt vs. 24 Watt)

Before we take the big task of replacing all the tubes we want to wait for the first electricity bill to see if it's worth the effort. --Phier and Milian

Laser cutter authentication system

We're in the process of moving the authentication system (the RFID token thingy) to our own backend since it runs at the moment on a former member's server.

It's about 90% done (including 3D printing a new case) and the plan is to finish it next week (CW10) or latest the week after. The process of unlocking the laser stays exactly the same. --Phier

Doorlock

Project is making process. A second top-hat rail was installed into the switch box in order to house all of the additional components. Furthermore the old broken hall sensor was removed from the door and the new one will be installed soon.

Plan is to do a beta test of the doorlock system in March. --Phier

Belt- and Discsander for the Workshop

It's a tool which is requested by many people and for a long time. After discussing the possibilities and agreeing on getting a decent one in this Slack Thread we found this from HBM 150 x 1220

It costs 240,- € and 70,-€ shipping. If we decide to order it we should also get some sanding paper (disc and belt). --Phier and Milian

Kreativlabor Open - Save the Date 19. - 21.06.2026

The Kreativlabor Open is an "open doors" event organized by the entire Kreativlabor area, with around 20 institutions taking part.

People who help at the Lab on that weekend are highly welcome! Join #kreativlaboropen on Slack if you want to support and for more information.

Phier and Milian took over the organization. We have already a rough program, but still need more people to support on the event weekend. There will be the possibility to the some funding which we plan to get.

Vorstand updates

Communication about collection of outstanding membership fees

The communication emails have been sent to all affected members. The collection will begin on March 16.

We’ll aim to clarify any remaining questions next week with everyone who replied via email.

Full details are also available on Slack: https://munichmakerlab.slack.com/archives/C78KSC5EG/p1771862575341399

Thanks to all member who support in this matter and all the member who already sent the outstanding member fees.

New Treasurer Needed

As mentioned at the last Plenum, the club is currently looking for a new Treasurer to join the board. If you’re interested in taking on this role, please reach out to Milian or Adrian for more details.

In the meantime, David and Phier have kindly offered to help with bookkeeping and member management until the board is complete again. The exact distribution of tasks will be clarified over the coming weeks.

This aligns with our general principle that organizational tasks don’t always need to be handled by board members and can be delegated to other active contributors.

An update will follow soon by email to all members as well.

Woklette

ChrisB and I have been working on making the Wok station that we've used on thursday more usable. I would like to store that on top of the kitchen cabinets so that we can use it regularly.

Maker Passport

Valentin and Adrian are trying to make some Maker Passport, structured kind of like a regular government Passport. The plan is to put Stickers or Stamps in them when you visit another makerspace. Someone needs to find a chinese supplier to make them properly.

If anyone else is interested please tell us. We'd also want to just stash some in the makerlab to give out to members for a donation.

Define proper limit for single purchases approved via plenum

For major decisions or larger purchases, we use a polling system (Loomio), which is sent to all members so everyone can participate in the decision.

In the past, we had a spending limit for purchases, but it was never clearly defined or documented. I propose setting a limit of 250 € per plenum for purchases that belong together (for example, equipment with accessories or expenses related to a specific event; also shipping must be included). This limit applies to a single topic, not to the total amount of all purchases approved within one plenum.

In general, the Vorstand still acts as a safeguard and has veto rights if a purchase is not in the club’s best interest (as defined in the statutes) or if the financial situation does not allow for larger expenditures.

I would add the documentation directly to the plenum template and our Decisions page.

Get Involved

If you want to be mentioned at the previous section as well, one of the easiest ways is to take one of our MiniJobs or to get involved in one of our Lab Projects.

This is a great way to participate in the Munich Maker Lab and contributing time helps to keep our space in a good shape.

Current key topics looking for additional support:

Storage Box update

  • Nico gets the storage space that Jan used to have
  • Robert and Energy4Ukraine get half of Bernhards old box each

=> Approved, move in is starting March
