Lab Projects
"Someone should ..." - This phrase is uttered very often when it comes to upgrades in the space, so why not gather all the ideas and running projects here?
How this page works
- You have an idea how to improve something in the Lab.
- Write down the basic info in the table below.
- As the project idea matures write down any further details/instructions onto this page.
For bigger projects (> 2 weeks working time) consider to create an own project page on the wiki. - Introduce your project on the next plenum or gather people to help you.
- Join other running projects to help finish them and learn something new.
- When finished move it to the "Finished Projects" table and tell everybody in Slack (#completed-projects) which awesome improvement you did!
Laser Cutter ToDo's
ToDo's regarding our Laser Cutter are gathered here: LaserCutter/Maintenance
ToDo Projects 💪
Title | Description (one or two sentences) | Lab area | Special skills needed | Contact person | Status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Sortout Vorstandschrank | Sort out with one of the "Vorstand" Member the Vorstandsschrank. A lot of stuff got stored there, which does belong better in other places | Community | - | task for cleanup and project day | |
Space sound system | We have a sound system in the workshop and in the main area. It was originally some kind of multiroom Audio, but super laggy when using it. At the moment only the Bluetooth system at the lasercube is mainly used.
Task: Check what is left of the old setup and improve (e.g. switch just to two bluetooth systems), so it's easily possible to play audio in the workshop and in the community area. Document how to use it. Documentation of the old setup: Multiroom audio |
Everywhere | finding someone who takes this task | ||
Replace drinks fridge | Our drinks fridge is quite old and really power hungry. We should replace it to safe power and money. | Community | finding someone who takes this task | ||
Optimize power consumption | We will be billed directly by our power consumption in the future. Therefore we should minimize our standby footprint. Task: Check what devices are not used anymore and include more stuff in our home automation, so that things get powered off, when the space is empty. | ||||
Fix matric LED display clock | We have an matrix display which shows the clock in the electronics lab. Unfortunately, the time is often wrong since the NTP sync seems not to work. Task: Re-flash the ESP with a functional clock version. The clock was originally setup by Korbinian. | Electronics Lab | Microcontroller | finding someone who takes this task | |
New life for old newsletter tablet | Next to the drinks fridge is a old tablet (from Jonas?) which is dead since a while. Since we do not have an actual newsletter we could show something else e.g. our latest social media topics. | Community | finding someone who takes this task | ||
Fix curtain | One of our "Molton" curtain, which we use at the rolling gates to isolate a bit better, got a cut and needs to get stitched | Community | Sewing machine | Ivan/Adrian | finding someone who takes this task
- nice task for cleanup and project day |
New life for monitors on the lasercube | At the door of the lasercube are two monitors, which have been originally run by two OrangePies. Both setups seems to be broken. Would be nice to add some new PIs and show some Data, e.g. from the Dust and temperature sensore or other fun stuff. | Outside of Laser Lounge | PC | general idea | 12.2024: Shubhsboson checked the Orange PIs, just new flashed SD cards have been necessary
Next step: Check what to show on the monitors => home assistant controll dashboard? |
Easy device handling on gaming corner | The devices at the gaming corner (TV, HiFi, consoles, etc.) should be connected to different switchable power sockets (so there is only one switch to turn on the TV, only one for the HiFi, etc.). Documentation on the wiki how to turn on/off the devices is also needed, along with a QR-code on the devices which point to the corresponding wiki page. | Wohnzimmer | - | Phier | looking for support |
Heating control | Make our heating controlable besides the original system on the wall. Idea: integrate into home assistant or similar | Whole lab | electronical | David, Severin | ? |
Cleanup Basement | In our basement the right back corner is full of old stuff. Would be good to check if we really need the leftovers there and maybe can better use the storage.
e.g. we have a lot of stuff on the lasercube which is hard to get down. Why not making our life easier by storing more stuff in the basement, where it is easier accessible |
Basement | - | Milian | looking for support
- nice task for cleanup and project day |
Improve peg boards workshop | We have big peg boards in the workshop, which are not really much used. Especially we could add some duplicate pliers from the community area and other tools from the drawers available directly on the wall for easy access.
- label tools with color code - sort main tools drawers in the community area |
Workshop | - | general idea | finding someone who takes this task
- nice task for cleanup and project day |
Improve heating workshop | We have two heater in the lab in the main area. Since the workshop is a separated room the warm air does not float into it. Idea was to have some kind of system that only brings warm air into the workshop, but without that dust can come into the main room. It would need also some kind of door mechanism for summer, so that the noise stays also inside the workshop cube. | Workshop | Phier | looking for support | |
Sort out electronics drawers | Scan through the drawers e.g. capacitors and improve labeling and sorting | Electronics Lab | - | Milian | finding someone who takes this task
- nice task for cleanup and project day |
In Progress Projects and Initiatives🏃
Title | Description (one or two sentences) | Lab area | Skills needed | Contact person | Status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
New proper arm for sawdust vacuum tube | The old and fragile plywood arm in the workshop should be replaced by a proper one made out of steel. | Workshop | crafting / maybe welding | Alex | in progress |
Move Artillery Sidewinder X2 back to the lasercube | After removing the Ulrich 3D Printer there is space in the laser shelf at the bottom right. Create some base plate on the existing cable channel and then place the artillery there. Re-level and test it. | 3D Printing | 3D printer skills; basic wood skills | Phier | In progress by Phier
Also good task for cleanup and project day. |
Filament spool winder | Since we have a BambuLab AMS which doesn't take every spool width a filament spool winder would be handy. So we could get the filament off a spool which doesn't fit and onto a spool which fit. It would be also useful for the case where you need to print with the same filament on multiple printers simultaneously. | 3D Printing | Crafting / 3D printing / electronics | Jonas, Phier | 95% done, needs some improvements parts |
Demoshelf improvement | Make the demo shelf more vivid | Community Area | Electronic | Milian | Demo Shelf
In progress, Looking for support |
Yard Garden update | Make your yard garden up to date and replace broken garden beds | Yard | Garden and Wood work | Aaron | In progress. Check Slack #gardening |
Improve space outdoor lighting appareance | Make the lab outdoor lighting better with some nice fairy lights and maybe also with an new sign | Yard | Electronic | Milian | Space Outdoor Lighting
In Planning: Looking for support |
Update IT Infrastructure | Own all webservices and bring to an up to date state | IT | IT | Milian, Severin | In Progress Working Group IT |
Fix our space sensors and make data available | We had some temperatur and dust sensor, but a few got broken or went back to their owner. Time to refresh it. | Lab | Electronic, IT | Milian | In Progress Sensors |
Improve Laser & 3D Printing lounge lighting | The light is quite low in the laser and printer area, since we had to exchange the lights temporarily. Time to get some brighter lights by adding some up to date LED ones | 3D Printing | Electronic | Phier | Stuff bought, to be mounted
Also good task for cleanup and project day. |
Power socket community area floor | Add power socket in the floor below the tables in the community area | Community Area | Wood and electric | Phier | Stuff bought, to be mounted
Also good task for cleanup and project day. |
Improve door lock | Upgrade doorlock to use lock in the door again | Entrance | electronical | David, Aaron, Chris, Phier, Milian | Doorlock, #doorlock channel |
Electric tree fun art | Reusing old PCBs and leftover parts to create some cool extension in the electronics corner. Mix of trash art and educational purpose | Electronics Corner | - | Milian | Electric-Tree
In progress, looking for support |
Document electrical power | It seems like most of our devices are hanging on only a few fuses. Idea is to document first all areas and what fuses they are connecetd to. | Lab | Electric | Milian | Electric power

Sort electronics boxes | When you're looking for a specific component it's exhausting to look through the small boxes which are stored in the shelf. The goal is to resort everything in those boxes into the big drawer (see photo below) as it's much easier to look through and find parts. If boxes/components are labeled, contact the person. If it's really old stuff, consider to throw it away. | Electronics corner | - | Milian | done |
Extend basement space for Euro Member boxen | The shelfs in the basement with the member boxes are nearly full.
Task: There are two more shelfs on the left side in the basement (metall color), that are not really used. Move both to the right side instead of the single white shelf. Adjust the hight of the shelf. Move the member boxes over. |
Basement | just screw driver skills | Milian | done |
Optimize workshop storage boxes | We have two wooden boxes in the workshop and one plastic box (with the vacuum accessoirs), that do not have a proper wooden lid. Task: build simple cover for the boxes (as the other boxes have already | Workshop | wood crafting | Milian | done |
Fix the table plugs | We have nice plugs for the wholes in our community tables, but the plugs fall out, if they are not screwed to the table. Task: Screw all plugs.

Sort out and refill drills drawer and check screws | The drawer with the drills in the workshop is a little mess. Someone should look through the drills, sort them, throw away broken ones and make a list which drills need to be bought (size and kind). Additional: Do some research about drill-grinding-machines. Is there an affordable machine which has good ratings? | Workshop | Basic mechanical knowledge | Milian | done |
Current state of the lathe | Someone who has already used a lathe (or even better: ours) should have a look what's currently wrong with it. Is it repairable? If yes, how much work and money would go into it? Present the results at the next Plenum where it will decided how to proceed with it.
=> update also wiki page: Lathe |
Workshop | Basic mechanical knowledge | - | done |
Replace Artillery Sidewinder X2 USB plug | The USB plug for USB Sticks of the 3D Printer Artillery Sidewinder X1 is broken and just hotfixed at the moment. Order replacement part and exchange the broken platine.
Replacement part: https://partner-3d.de/usb-platine-artillery/?gQT=1 |
3D Printing | basic repair skills | Phier | done |
Current state of the big drill press | Our big drill press (the one next to the garage door) has a major imbalance. Someone who has basic knowledge of a gearbox and/or bearings should have a look at it. Is it repairable? If yes, how much work and money would go into it? Present the results at the next Plenum where it will decided how to proceed with it. | Workshop | Basic mechanical knowledge | Ivan | done
Left machine might need some new "Bohrfutter" in the future: https://munichmakerlab.slack.com/archives/C019J47R25Q/p1736611454025069 |
Sort out computer part cabinet | The computer parts cabinet next to the lasercube is full of stuff, that does not belong to it. I would be better to take things like switches and place them on top of the cabinet and get the other boxes from the top down. So what is used the most is easy to get and the other stuff is on the cabinet | Community Area | - | Milian | done |
LED Projects Documentation | We have a bunch of WLED powered blinky projects installed in the space, but there's no documentation in the wiki :'( | Whole Lab | writing Wiki Articles | ChrisB/AdrianM | 11/2024 |
Prusa i3 Z-Axis issue | Our big Prusa 3D Printer (i3 MK3S) has an issue on the Z-Axis. As the photo (see below) shows there is a thick layer every 23 mm. Maybe one or both Z-Axis spindles have an imbalance and needs to be fixed/replaced. | 3D Corner | Spacezhang | 11/2024 | |
Laser Cutter door brackets | The current brackets for the laser cutter door are old prints and are all cracking, this means the front door panel can come off if all brackets fail. Ideally we would design bulkier brackets with modern materials and install them | Laser Cutter | Adrian & Bernhard | 10/2024 | |
Improved water tap at men's toilet | The foot switch has been installed with minimal changes to the wiring. If someone wants to do some extra improvements (e.g. bolt it to the ground, improve water resistance with a gasket here and there) they're welcome to :) | Toiletts | Adrian | 10/2024 |
