20250525 Plenum

From The Munich Maker Lab's Wiki

The Plenum is a regular meeting of all people involved with the space to talk about things and decide stuff. If you have any topics to add, go right ahead! Please sign your points with your name (by adding a "--~~~~" after your text).

After the Plenum, please follow the tasks outlined in Cycling the Plenum to archive the discussion.

Preamble

  • The Plenum is an institution to decide what the space should look like, physically and in other ways, such as virtually.
  • Things concerning the space should be discussed at a plenum.
  • Everyone on-site can participate in that process, member or otherwise.
  • Everyone can lead a plenum; no need for board members to do that.
  • Topics should ideally be announced on the Plenum wiki page beforehand.
  • The Plenum should be held in a language that everyone participating understands.
  • Scheduling: Second Thursday of the month at 8 pm and the last Sunday after the cleanup (which starts at 11 am)
  • Plenums should be no longer than 90 minutes.

These are the notes of the Starship Enterprise Plenum that took place on Sunday, May 25th at 12pm

Kreativlabor Open Report

Overview

• The event ran very smoothly.

• There were no real issues.

• People were fascinated by the space concepts.

• Running the event was not much extra effort, except for being present all weekend. Our space is already designed for people to gather. This time was a bit special because we had to create a new plan for the lab, restart the soldering workshops, check all our event equipment, and replace a few items.

What went well

• Large name tags for space members were very helpful so people could ask questions.

• The huge demo table at the entrance was a great eye-catcher.

• We were included in the printed program. Many people came because of this, including families with children and those who wanted to try soldering for a long time. Visitors wanted to participate, not just look at art or performances at the event.

• Outdoor decorations and another event in our yard helped attract people passing by.

• There were always enough members on site, so everyone had the chance to visit other venues too.

Areas for Improvement

• 3D printing should be partly moved outside the laser cube. Some people are hesitant to enter the box.

• We could offer drinks, but this would require registration in advance and fixed prices.

• If the weather is good, we should organize some activities outdoors.

• Member commitment: We need more people to commit to being at the event and reliably organizing a small activity on their own.

• The outdoor appearance of our space is a bit plain and could be improved with more decorations in general. Makes the preparation effort also much simpler.

This could be a good follow-up project.

• The demo table at the event, featuring 3D-printed and laser-cut items, was very successful. We should enhance our current demo presentation, making it more visually appealing. Anything that can light up or move should be set up to do so, to attract even more attention.

Soldering Workshop

• The cheap soldering stations worked great, but the regular old soldering irons broke one after another. We want to buy some more soldering stations for the future

More details can be found here: Workshop Soldering and Electronics Art

Other Notes

• We received €185 in donations for the soldering workshop and 15€ in general.

Follow up projects

Improve Space Outdoor Lightning: in planning => Milian will propose something regarding fairy light. If someone is interested to improve MuMaLab sign on the wall, feel free to take the part of the project.

Improve Demo Shelf: in planning

I got asked by a teacher if it was possible to hold similar workshops for an entire (or half) a class of pupils. She mentioned that it would need to be 5 consecutive days during school hours. I was initially skeptic we could make it work, but Teachers would be there the entire time and might be able to oversee the workshop so we don't have to be there all the time. Either way, she got my email address but has not reached out yet, so I hope I did not come across as too sceptic. In hindsight I feel like supporting committed teachers is always a cool thing to do --Aaron

Projects & Groups update

This is a quick update from group meetings at our space, other long-term space projects (e.g., Lasercutter, CNC, etc.) or of the lab internal projects.

  • Summer event: Maybe we can combine a simple and small summer party with the next "Mitgliederversammlung"- --Milian
  • We have a new drill press which should be easier to use as the old one. More infos about it at #workshop in Slack. --Phier
  • Gardening: Planting our new Hochbeete went great! And I think I finally have a solution for our problematic tall planters --Aaron

Vorstand updates

Say Thank you

  • Milian for organizing our presence at the Kreativequartier Open. You did an amazing job!
  • Everyone who helped make Kreativlabor open happen
  • Dima for adding a fix to our workshop vacuum
  • Tina, David, Lötbert, Dima, Karl, and Aaron for cleaning up the space
  • Adrian und Karl for getting new drinks
  • Ufo for donating battery cases and dremel accessories and 5V 80A power supplies

MiniJobs

If you want to be mentioned at the previous section as well, one of the easiest ways is to take one of our MiniJobs. This is a great way to participate in the Munich Maker Lab e.V. and contributing time helps keeping our space in a good shape. You can find all information about the scope of the available jobs on MiniJobs.

Stuff from the past

Anything you don't feel comfortable with within the space? What would you like to change or to be changed?

Jan: Possibly replace an old server in the basement that takes a lot of power
