Revision as of 13:01, 26 November 2023

The Plenum is a regular meeting of all people involved with the space to talk about things and decide stuff. If you have any topics to add, go right ahead! Please sign your points with your name (by adding a "--~~~~" after your text).

After the Plenum, please follow the tasks outlined in Cycling the Plenum to archive the discussion.

Preamble

  • The Plenum is an institution to decide what the space should look like, physically and in other ways, such as virtually.
  • Things concerning the space should be discussed at a plenum.
  • Everyone on-site can participate in that process, member or otherwise.
  • Everyone can lead a plenum; no need for board members to do that.
  • Topics should ideally be announced on the Plenum wiki page beforehand.
  • The Plenum should be held in a language that everyone participating understands.
  • Scheduling: Second Thursday of the month at 8 pm and the last Sunday after the cleanup (which starts at 11 am)
  • Plenums should be no longer than 90 minutes.

Next Plenum: Sunday, November 26th after the CLeanup

Topics for the Plenum

What are you currently working on?

Projects & Groups update

This is a quick update from group meetings at our space or other long-term space projects (e.g., Lasercutter, CNC, etc.)

Vorstand update

  • Tax: We got our receipt back. So we've been officially charitable in the last 3 years. Next tax is due in 3 years
  • Labor: Discussions with the cultural department of the city are going on. Current aim is the founding of an operating company.
  • MVHS: Severing and David did a Volkshochschulkurs, 8 participants wanted to know something about the lab and open workshops in general.

--David

Say Thank you

  • Severin for patching the Wiki
  • Q3K and spacezhang for fixing the Prusa MK3

MiniJobs

If you want to be mentioned at the previous section as well, one of the easiest ways is to take one of our MiniJobs. This is a great way to participate in the Munich Maker Lab e.V. and contributing time helps keeping our space in a good shape. You can find all information about the scope of the available jobs on MiniJobs.

Stuff from the past

What was discussed at the last Plenum? What's the current status of those things? 20231109 Plenum

Anything you don't feel comfortable with within the space? What would you like to change or to be changed?

Member Boxes in the Pit

Again a few member boxes that are either not the right type, people storing unboxed items and with obscure names on the box. I would like to relocate them to the project pallet with a note on slack + time limit to migrate to a proper box and a name that can be matched by the Vorstand.

Social Media

  • We still have an account on X (formerly known as Twitter). Due to all that's been happening over there, I'd suggest to lock that down and not use it anymore. Deletion may not be the best solution, but setting it to private and clearly stating that we don't want to use it anymore. We could also open up an alternative account on Mastodon, e.g. on muenchen.social or chaos.social. (Note: I won't be at the Plenum to discuss this, but would still like to see some kind of feedback. Happy to also discuss this on Slack) --Tiefpunkt (talk) 22:46, 19 November 2023 (CET)
    • In favor of keeping it BUT adding mastodon handle to the account name before we take it offline in 3-6 month? in favor of using chaos.social as 99% future proof and well maintained. --ⓒ②② (🅃🄰🄻🄺) 22:55, 19 November 2023 (CET)
  • Our website is still "powered" by our tumblr log. This seems like it's not exactly future proof. Do we have any ideas on how to deal with that or improve that situation? --Tiefpunkt (talk) 22:46, 19 November 2023 (CET)
    • As long as it is working and we have backups of the posts (do we?) I actually don't mind. It is still better than XYZ framework or WP that isn't being maintained OR bothersome for the few people that want to post content. --ⓒ②② (🅃🄰🄻🄺) 22:55, 19 November 2023 (CET)

Our IT infrastructure

We run two VMs "in the cloud" as well as some infrastructure in the lab itself, + quite some supporting stuff that's handled by individuals. Some of it is getting old™ and may need some love/regular maintenance. Who'd be up to help support this? Some tasks that come to mind:

  • Update our mailing list (Mailman 2 to 3 is a bit of a difficult migration)
    • I love email but is anyone even using the lists? This is the first time I've heard we even have them. Perhaps we should just kill them and keep an archive? //q3k dixit
  • Revisiting our complete mail setup
  • Updating the wiki and it's extensions, potentially thinking about some more automation here as well
  • Doing a bit of a scan and documentation of all the services we still have running
  • Backups!

--Tiefpunkt (talk) 22:46, 19 November 2023 (CET)

  • ^ The above means the services running in the pit, not the switch rack that is above ground. It is actively being maintained by me/backup Aaron. (see List of Contacts) --ⓒ②② (🅃🄰🄻🄺) 22:58, 19 November 2023 (CET)

Wiki Spam

We would like to try a new way to combat wiki spam. We get a lot of bogus account requests each day, which is a bit of a hustle to deal with. One thing we could try is to have one question as part of the request process, which requires a bit of knowledge of the space. We could compile a list of these questions, maybe the Plenum has some ideas? (Don't write the answers down here, that would kind of defeat the purpose.) From my perspective, I feel like it's always a thin line of make wiki signup even more complicated, as it hinders people adding to this knowledge base, but also we don't want too much bogus requests to bog us down. What do you think? --Tiefpunkt (talk) 22:46, 19 November 2023 (CET)

  • I suggest adding an answer that does not make sense to bots and that they can not figure out instead of 20 questions which makes it hard for new people and hard for us (to figure out right questions). My proposal is: Random question, answer string next to the WiFi PW + Slack (e.g. welcome message or description in the main channel). Right now people usually communicate that they need a wiki account so most of the time it will be like "Yep, just register, the answer to the question is spikefish". --ⓒ②② (🅃🄰🄻🄺) 22:52, 19 November 2023 (CET) (ps bots, its not spikefish, kthxbye)
  • Another option: Slack is offering a "Sign in with Slack" OAuth. So only users which are already in our Slack could access the wiki. Plus having two accounts would be a thing of the past. --Philipp

Better oscilloscope for the electronics lab (q3k)

I brought a Siglent SDS 1202X-E (with two probes) to the lab. It's my secondary/travel oscilloscope, which means I only need it when I'm travelling to hacker events, etc. Otherwise I never use it, so it might as well stay at the lab.

I would like to leave it there, because we really need a proper digital oscilloscope.

Related: Might be time to sell off at least one of the old analog scopes we have to reclaim the space.

  • In favor of getting rid of the old screws to have more space for useful tools! Would also be a good time to get rid of the eeepc that has been idling in this corner for ages. --ⓒ②② (🅃🄰🄻🄺) 18:38, 25 November 2023 (CET)

3D printing

  • Discussion: Should the Lab buy some filament? Chris K. offered some old filament to buy.
  • Issue: When working on the large printers (Prusa 3 & Sidewinder) one is basically sitting on the floor (plus the lower board isn't extractable).

Idea: Rearrange the shelf. Move filament boxes to the bottom, above the Prusa Minis and above them the Prusa 3 and Sidewinder (one additional board needed). Advanced option: Use linear actuators to move the board with the lower printers on it upwards (like an electric desk).

Things to Buy

  • Would be great to add citric acid (~22€) in 5L canister to the consumables list, great cleaning supply. Probably every 6 month or once a year is fine! --ⓒ②② (🅃🄰🄻🄺) 18:42, 25 November 2023 (CET)
  • We should really define a budget for a replacement dishwasher, so we can grab a good condition used one when a chance comes up (same that we did with the oven). Unfortunately the cleaning performance keeps getting worse, even though all filters are cleaned and it is supplied with everything it needs. --ⓒ②② (🅃🄰🄻🄺) 18:44, 25 November 2023 (CET)
  • Flaschenöffner for the fridge ("Gastro") ~5€ (There is already a bottle opener on the fridge --Philipp )
  • New sliding caliper (Messschieber). We have one but it's a frequently used tool. The 2nd one we have is from ancient times and not really usable. --Philipp
